For many years, pet owners have given fatty acids to their dogs and cats to change a dull, dry hair coat into a more glossy one. More recently, veterinarians have found that fatty acids play important roles in other areas of skin and coat health such as allergies, the control of inflammation, joint health, and the function of other body organs in dogs and cats,
'In de twintigste eeuw is de verhouding tussen omega-3 en omega-6 vetzuren in de voeding sterk opgeschoven in de richting van omega-6 vetzuren. Geschat wordt dat de verhouding tussen omega-6 en omega-3 vetzuren in de westerse voeding ongeveer 20-25 : 1 is. Een verhouding van ongeveer 5:1 tot 10:1 is echter wenselijker. Evolutionair gezien heeft de mens (en zijn voorlopers) miljoenen jaren omega-6 en omega-3 in een verhouding van 1:1 tot 2:1 geconsumeerd.'
